Nielsen made three saves in his seventh shutout of the season as Sporting Kansas City routed D.C. United on Saturday night to settle first place in the Eastern Conference.
Sporting defender Matt Besler grabbed the winner in the 54th-minute to earn a 1-0 win for his side in the final game of regular season.
After this victory, Kansas City became the first team to have finished first in both the Eastern and Western Conferences.
Kansas City began the game aggressively and created the game’s first chance in the 4th minute when Kei Kamara’s cross found Omar Bravo woefully unmarked in the box, but he struck the shot inoffensively high.
D.C. United, which failed to score for the first time in eight matches, had a chance to open the scoring just two minutes later through De Rosario when Nielsen spilled Santino Quaranta’s shot from distance.
Sporting KC broke the deadlock in the 9th minute of restart when Kamara headed a corner kick off the post, Matt Besler collected the loose ball and fired a shot past Bill Hamid.
